HJSplit is a popular freeware program to split files and join again. The program is available on Windows, Linux and various other platforms.
HJSplit can also be useful for backups. A file such as 10 gigabytes in size can be divided into parts smaller which can then be burned to CD's, DVD, copied to a USB stick or uploaded to an online backup service.
